(GEOL 105) Geology of the Pacific Basin

Geological principles of the Pacific Basin area with emphasis on its origin, composition, and structure, in addition to general geologic principles related to the Earth. One half day field trip.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester you should, at a minimum, have gained the following:

  • Know the different, major rock types and how they are related.
  • An ability to identify common geologic features and understand how they formed.
  • A knowledge and understanding of how the Hawaiian and other Pacific Islands formed and how they are still forming and being modified.
  • An understanding of plate tectonic processes.
  • An understanding of river and coastal processes that produce a shoreline, and gain an appreciation for the dynamic nature of coastal environments.
  • An understanding of the importance of Earth's resources - what they are, and how they are used, as well as the impacts humans can have for good and bad on those resources.
  • A knowledge of some of the major hazards associated with geologic processes.
