(EIL 229) Intermediate II Reading

Emphasizes developing comprehension of academic readings and introduces basic academic writing skills related to course readings. Fee required.

Course Outcomes

  1. Reading:
    • Read and process academic texts efficiently, noting length, complexity, and time constraints.
  2. Listening:
    • Students will be able to listen to and process academic discourse (e.g. lectures, presentations, videos, etc.).
  3. Speaking:
    • Students will be able to participate orally in both whole-class and small-group settings.
  4. Writing:
    • Students will be able to write in academically appropriate ways.
  5. Vocabulary:
    • Students will know many of the frequently occurring words on the Academic Word List (AWL).
  6. Grammar:
    • Students will be able to write in academically appropriate ways.
  7. Learner Autonomy:
    • Develop strategies for vocabulary learning which increases reading speed and comprehension in academic texts.
    • Complete two hours of extensive reading each week
