(ENGL 315) Topics for Advanced Writing and Analysis

Intensive course focusing on a specific theme to facilitate in-depth thinking, analysis, and discussion through critical reading, research, and expository and report writing. Requires various forms of writing, including an extended research paper.

Course Outcomes


In their writing:
1. Develop sophisticated thought by asserting and supporting a complex thesis in their writing.
2. Address different audiences and purposes through various kinds of writing.

In their reading:
1. Read texts critically.
2. Apply various theoretical approaches to texts.
3. Use secondary resources to develop contextual and critical meaning for a text.

In their research:
1. Research a topic relevant to the theme of the class.
2. Search and critically evaluate all relevant search sources.
3. Employ effective research tools, such as discipline-specific search engines and annotated bibliographies.
4. Understand plagiarism and avoid it.
5. Select and integrate information and quotes from sources into a paper of at least 3000 words.
6. Provide complete, accurate documentation for source uses.

In their thinking:
1. Critique the thinking and writing of other students.
2. Use secondary criticism to guide or temper their interpretations of texts.
3. Present and defend that interpretation to others in the class, orally and in writing groups.
