(BIOL 442L) Cellular Biology Laboratory

This course provides hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture as a central tool in cell biology. Students will learn fundamental techniques to maintain and manipulate mammalian cultures: aseptic techniques, cell passaging, cryopreservation, viability assays, transfection, and others.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in mammalian cell culture techniques by safely performing aseptic technique, media preparation, routine subculturing, cryopreservation, and long-term maintenance of mammalian cell lines.
  2. Apply appropriate laboratory instrumentation and safety practices to culture, observe, and manipulate mammalian cells using biosafety cabinets, CO₂ incubators, light and fluorescent microscopes, hemocytometers, and cryogenic storage systems.
  3. Analyze quantitative cell culture data by determining cell concentration, viability, growth characteristics, and transfection efficiency, and interpreting results in the context of experimental objectives.
  4. Communicate experimental findings clearly and professionally through accurate laboratory notebook documentation and formal written lab reports that present results, figures, and conclusions according to accepted scientific standards.
