Laboratory methods used in protein biochemistry – protein expression, extraction, purification, separation and analysis. The lab provides hands-on experience with bacterial transformation and culture, protein extraction and chromatography, centrifugation, spectrophotometry, SDS and Native gel electrophoresis and analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate proficiency in essential protein-based laboratory techniques by expressing, purifying, quantifying, and identifying a recombinant protein (GFP) using established biochemical methods.
- Apply appropriate laboratory instrumentation and safety practices to biochemical experiments involving proteins, including the use of autoclaves, centrifuges, pH meters, spectrophotometers, chromatography systems, and electrophoresis apparatus.
- Analyze experimental data related to protein purification and characterization, including chromatography fractions, protein concentration assays, and SDS-PAGE and native-PAGE results, to evaluate experimental success and troubleshoot procedures.
- Communicate biochemical experimental results clearly and professionally through accurate laboratory notebook documentation and formal written lab reports that present data, figures, and conclusions according to accepted scientific standards.
