(ENGL 392) Introduction to Literary Editing and Publishing/Kula Manu

An introduction to the issues and practices of literary magazine editing and publishing, with an examination of both print journals and web-based magazines. Hands-on experience includes students creating their own single-issue magazine and staffing BYU–Hawaii’s campus literary journal, Kula Manu.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the history and significance of the “small magazine” (literary journal) in American culture.
  2. Compare and contrast literary journals in terms of mission, focus, readership, funding sources, editorial influence, design, layout, print/electronic distribution, etc.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the role of an editor with a literary journal, and their practice of that role as a member of the staff of the literary journal.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the role of an editor with a literary journal, and their practice of that role as a member of the staff of the literary journal.
  5. Demonstrate a first-hand familiarity with the entire process of journal publication, including promotion, use of industry-standard software, solicitation, selection, editorial oversight, budgeting, layout/design, and printing/publication and distribution.
