(ENGL 392) Introduction to Literary Editing and Publishing/Kula Manu
An introduction to the issues and practices of literary magazine editing and publishing, with an examination of both print journals and web-based magazines. Hands-on experience includes students creating their own single-issue magazine and staffing BYU–Hawaii’s campus literary journal, Kula Manu.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the history and significance of the “small magazine” (literary journal) in American culture.
- Compare and contrast literary journals in terms of mission, focus, readership, funding sources, editorial influence, design, layout, print/electronic distribution, etc.
- Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the role of an editor with a literary journal, and their practice of that role as a member of the staff of the literary journal.
- Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the role of an editor with a literary journal, and their practice of that role as a member of the staff of the literary journal.
- Demonstrate a first-hand familiarity with the entire process of journal publication, including promotion, use of industry-standard software, solicitation, selection, editorial oversight, budgeting, layout/design, and printing/publication and distribution.
