(IT 281) Cybersecurity Essentials

This technical course provides a comprehensive overview of cybersecurity principles, mapped to CompTIA Security+ exam objectives. Students will learn how to identify and mitigate threats, implement secure architectures, manage access controls, and respond to security incidents. Topics also include cryptography, wireless and cloud security, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and differentiate between common types of social engineering, malware, and application attacks, including their characteristics and impacts.
  2. Evaluate security vulnerabilities and threat intelligence to assess risk and recommend mitigation strategies.
  3. Explain the importance of secure network, cloud, and system architecture design using principles such as segmentation and zero trust.
  4. Assess the impact of security controls and resiliency strategies in different environments.
  5. Apply secure configuration practices for devices, networks, wireless systems, and cloud platforms.
  6. Implement and manage identity and access controls, including authentication, authorization, and identity federation.
  7. Execute basic incident response procedures and utilize appropriate tools for detection, analysis, and containment.
  8. Describe key governance and compliance frameworks, risk management concepts, and security policies affecting cybersecurity operations.
