(STDEV 252) Empowerment Self Defense
This course teaches verbal and mental skills for violence prevention and de-escalation, including assertive body language, boundary setting, and the making of informed choices to assess and possibly avoiding violent situations. It also provides physical skills that harness the strengths of our bodies and psyches.

Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should have gained the following knowledge, skills and attitudes:
- Be able to identify and avoid coercive and dangerous situations.
- Gain the skills to set verbal boundaries.
- Train in practical physical skills.
- Build self-confidence and growth in assertiveness and self-understanding.
- Know and understand the five principles of empowerment self defense.
- Become familiar with issues around consent, healthy and unhealthy relationships, gender-based violence, and bystander intervention.
