Selected literatures from the colonial period through the American Renaissance, including early Native, African-American, and women writers along with Hawthorne, Poe, Emerson, Thoreau and Melville.

  1. Be exposed to a range of early American literary texts.
  2. Get a sense of the chronological significance of these texts in broader philosophical, political, and historical contexts.
  3. Understand how aesthetic aims of authors have changed since the earliest writings in America.
  4. See how those changes still influence our understanding of what “America” means to its citizens and the rest of the world.
