Introduction to construction and facilities management includes basic construction management principles, estimating project costs, contract administration, job site management, project planning/scheduling/performance/quality, safety, risk management, building information modeling (BIM), and sustainability in the built environment.

Course Learning Outcomes

Each student who passes this course will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand the general nature of the construction industry, project management as it applies to construction, and how work is acquired and managed.
  2. Comprehend the purpose and use of construction contracts, different types of contracts, and the stages of project and facility management.
  3. Understand the value of the project team, how to motivate, manage, and communicate effectively as a team member and as a team leader.
  4. Comprehend the basic pre-construction services, understand project costs and know how to apply estimating tools. Know the impact and importance of contract administration, payment schedules, change process, and claims.
  5. Understand the basic elements of project management execution to include project operations and job site management. Know and understand the relationship between project management elements to include planning, scheduling, quality, safety, and risk management.
  6. Learn how the Building Information Model (BIM) applies to new construction, renovation, and facility management. Understand how BIM and other tools facilitate collaboration.
  7. Understand how sustainability impacts the built environment and the standards for sustainable certification.
