(CFM 299) Construction and Facilities Management Practicum

A practical hands-on experience that will give the students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in their construction and facilities courses and observe those things in action as they work alongside the staff and professionals of BYUH Facilities Management.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this course, student will be able to:

  • Understand the concepts and terminology of facilities and construction management including infrastructure systems, HVAC, electrical, preventive vs. corrective maintenance, landscaping, janitorial services, work management, and facilities/construction accounting.
  • Understand proper maintenance, safety procedures, and protocols based on hands-on learning.
  • Create maintenance programs.
  • Manage facilities key access.
  • Understand the importance of janitorial services to the overall maintenance of the facilities and how to properly clean the spaces within the facility.
  • Navigate a building automation system (BAS).
  • Know how to properly use hand tools, heavy equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Inspect facilities and construction projects.
  • Create and manage projects.
  • Conduct a capital needs analysis.
  • Maintain a healthy landscape which includes irrigation.
  • Use a “systems thinking” approach to decision making.
  • Gain a greater appreciation for sustainability in facilities and construction management.
  • Skillfully work with professionals in facilities and construction management.
  • Be more aware of innovation and how to foster that mind set.
  • Be able to train others in facilities and construction management.
