(ELED 240) Children’s Literature in Elementary Schools

This course is a survey course of children’s literature exploring the various genres of children’s literature, examining trends in children’s literature, and practicing methods of integrating literature into the elementary school curriculum.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop the self-confidence and skills they need to teach children’s literature in the K-6 classroom.
  2. Reflect on and deepen their philosophy of effective classroom reading instruction.
  3. Actively participate in literature circles and share reading discussions with the class.
  4. Create and present an author study of appropriate children’s books.
  5. Demonstrate effective pedagogy in a children’s literature reflection journal, reading log, and final presentation.
