(IPB 271) Mindfulness in Peacebuilding

This course will introduce students to the theories and research in the field of mindfulness. Students will study emerging scientific research that shows the physical and mental health benefits when mindfulness practice is implemented into daily life and will learn how to implement mindfulness techniques in peacebuilding fieldwork.

Course Learning Outcomes

Each student who passes this course will be able to do the following:

  • Develop an understanding of how to skillfully cultivate concentration with thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, as it relates to stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions.
  • Learn techniques to develop positive emotions such as joy, kindness, empathy, gratitude, compassion, and self-compassion.
  • Gain an understanding of the theory, practice, and research of mindfulness and how to apply that knowledge to individual practice.
  • Learn practical skills in mindfulness and apply them in the fieldwork of Peacebuilding.
  • Learn how to lead mindfulness workshops
  • Conduct research around topics related to mindfulness and peacebuilding
  • Learn methods to increase mindful awareness in daily activities and communication as students develop a sustainable personal meditation and mindfulness practice.
