(ELED 347) Math Methods for Elementary Teachers, Part I

Students examine elementary mathematics from a theoretical and practical background, focusing on the early learner, Kindergarten through Second Grade. Emphasis will be placed on applying research-based strategies, using manipulatives to establish a solid math foundation for later grades.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate math proficiency in teaching math areas for kindergarten through third grade.
  2. Demonstrate and explore a number of proven math education theories and models.
  3. Develop and write a Math Autobiography and a Philosophy of Teaching K-2 Math essay.
  4. Develop and teach a detailed lesson plan according to BYU–Hawaii Teacher Education approved Lesson Plan Template.
  5. Write detailed reflections of their in-class teaching experience.
  6. Describe the value of manipulatives for teaching math in their math philosophy paper and in-class discussions.
  7. Demonstrate the progression from concrete to abstract when learning math in their teaching.
  8. Differentiate math instruction for different proficiency levels in their lesson plans, math philosophy, and in-class discussions.
