(PSYC 307) Qualitative Research Methods

This course covers numerous facets of qualitative research methods - with emphasis on observing, interviewing, and analyzing people in interaction. Including a critical examination of the difference between methodologies and methods of qualitative approaches as well as how to collect data through interviews, observations, and experiments and the diverse ways of analyzing qualitative data (i.e., grounded-theory, phenomenological, discourse and narrative analysis).

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and understand fundamental ideas involved in qualitative methodologies.
  2. Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
  3. Critically explore and articulate our own assumptions (biases) and perspectives.
  4. Reason critically about choosing any methodology for application in a particular research situation, and appreciate the importance of these choices for the research.
  5. Apply basic observation, interview, analysis and interpretation skills with some proficiency.
