(THEA 221) Voice, Speech, and Movement

An introduction to vocal production using phonetics (IPA), exercises focused on release of sound, breathing, sound production, and freeing habitual tensions. Pairing the voice with an introduction to stage movement. Instruction in physical work using exercises, slow tempo, martial arts, and improvisation.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of releasing vocal tension through participation in vocal exercises, warm ups, and application of readings in class work.
  2. Develop basic skills in stage dialects by performing prepared monologues using IPA to find sound substitutions.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of Suzuki movement work by participating in training session performances.
  4. Develop an understanding of basic stage unarmed combat by performing a scene using safety techniques; making it believable for stage use.
  5. Show an increased sense of physical awareness of the world, specifically the physical characteristics of human behavior.
