(CHEM 201) Chemical and Laboratory Safety

Lectures and demonstrations are designed to prepare students to work safely in the chemistry lab. Topics covered include regularity and compliance protocols, chemical hazards, protection, prevention, emergencies and other aspects essential for laboratory safety.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Chemical safety and hazardous chemicals: demonstrate safe handling of chemicals and equipment in the laboratory. To develop an understanding of material safety data sheets (MSDS) and safety data sheets (SDS). To learn particularly hazardous, incompatible, and other frequently used chemicals.
  2. Chemical labeling: demonstrate knowledge of reading hazard labels provided by vendors and also requirements of those produced by consumers.
  3. Good lab practice and housekeeping: demonstrate knowledge of good laboratory practices and housekeeping. To develop an understanding of personal housekeeping in laboratories.
  4. Emergency Eequipment: to learn the types of available safety equipment and their appropriate usage.
  5. Standard operating procedures: recognize and maintain, various and appropriate PPE in a laboratory setting as well as evaluating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety plans.
  6. Waste and spill handling: to properly identify, handle, and store waste generated. To review the importance of preventing and attending to accidents in the laboratories.
  7. Compliance: to gain an appreciation for our stewardship in the laboratory and safety planning. To develop an understanding of the BYU–Hawaii chemical hygiene plan. To develop an understanding of regulatory agencies and their importance in laboratory compliance.
